Pedal * Blog

I read a great quote this morning from Steven Soderbergh (thanks to Erin’s Tumblr),

“I want to thank anyone who spends part of their day creating. I don’t care if it’s a book, a film, a painting, a dance, a piece of theater, a piece of music. Anybody who spends part of their day sharing their experience with us. I think the world would be unlivable without art.”

And it left me wondering what all of you do to create? What is it you work on to keep yourself from going insane? I would say, I have a good idea what many of you work on, because I follow many of you on sites like Facebook, Vimeo, and Twitter.

But some of you might not be so upfront about what you create – whether out of modesty or shyness, etc. But I’d love to hear it – I’d love to see it. I’m looking forward to your comments!

  • Professionally I am a web designer, so I create websites (http://uunions.umich.edu is one of my more recent things, though as with many recent projects there are things I don't really like)
So I am not really sure what I create anymore outside of work, so I will just tell you projects, and this is yet unannounced: A web video graphic novel. It will be episodic content 6-10 minutes (maybe more maybe less), full voiceover with storybook style motion graphics, (Think ken burns style stills + a little of the Mythbusters style animation) this is totally still in the planning stages. Me and my friend Carl are working on these. Hoping for the first teaser to be out Oct 14... none of this is official.
  • Hey Scott! :) I think it's pretty awesome you essentially just publicly announced your upcoming project on Pedal's blog. I iz exclusive (and a dork).

But your project sounds pretty awesome - it definitely sounds like it's going to make great use of the web. I'm looking forward to the 14th then ;)
  • I've forgotten what it is I create...I'm sure I'll remember soon, but itt was nice having others share what they create :)
  • In case you need reminding ;) You create beautiful photographs... and pretty awesome drawings of owls *

  • I really enjoyed your light painting - especially the circles in the garden :)

  • Hey Romain :) I love your lightpainting shots - you should record yourself making one of those sometime... I've always wondered how much went into making them.

    Hi Mike,

Most of my creative energy goes into my Book MP3 DVD project for Japanese English learners. It's several years in the making... to travel and gather audio, video, story content for the project, and then turn it all into a tool language learners can use to improve their communication skills.

You can see my book preview video on top of my blog:

The rest of my creativity goes into being the very best father I can to my two boys ages 5 and 9.

    Great question by the way.

    NO Creativity... NO Life!

    Keep on truckin my friend!
  • Hey William :) that's a very cool project - I subscribed so I can keep an eye on your new videos and audio clips. Thank you very much for sharing that.

I don't think I'd call my videos "art" but its something creative that I like to do and share with others. It's about sharing an experience, much like FToM. You see or experience something and your first reaction is "wow how can I show other people this?" The art is the experience, what I do is just presentation.
  • @dustrotter I like that a lot :) "art is the experience" the rest is just presentation.
